Groupon, the inventor of group buying that led to an influx of group buying websites the world over, is closing shop in South Africa. This means a lot for the players in the same space, as their inspiration seems to be losing hope in the industry.
In Kenya there has been Rupu, and Zetu sometime back. Zetu closed shop and Rupu has been hanging on, we don’t know for how long since even with the Ringier money, and partnerships with media houses like Capital FM, the market doesn’t seem to grow, and there is new ways Group buying sites are getting disrupted. One if them is airtime recharge apps, like Ocharge and Xtravalue.
Well, all I can say is that it’s a space to watch.
